Johanna Westerdijk studied botany and zoology in Amsterdam and became the first female professor in the Netherlands.
In 1906, Westerdijk was offered the directorship of the W.C. Sholten Laboratory. She was only 23 years old.
Westerdijk was a leading authority in phytopathology and in the study of mosses and fungi.
