Sabine Zlatin was born in Poland but became a French citizen in 1939.
Working with a charity for Jewish children, Zlatin helped to secure the release of jewish children from camps at Agde and Rivesaltes. She founded the Hérault refugee children's home in an attempt to provide a place of safety.
Sadly, in 1944, the Gestapo removed all 44 of the children and the 7 adults looking after them. All were either gassed or shot, including Zlatin's husband.
Sabine Zlatin was away during the arrests and later testified against Klaus Barbie at his war crimes trial.
