this is the "about history woman" page
Who is The History Woman?
I discovered a love of history rather late in life, having dropped it at school at the earliest opportunity. It didn't seem relevant to me back then. What did interest me throughout my life though were personal stories and I've always enjoyed a good biography, although I never linked this to "history" in any way.
Family history was vaguely interesting to me and, in the end, it was researching family that has led me to the point where I consider myself a historian and now happily call myself The History Woman.
There were stories, as I grew up, that my Great Great Grandmother was "a leading light" in the Temperance Movement and that she had travelled the world "speechifying" for the cause.
(How I love that word "speechifying" - it so brilliantly conjures up a bygone age!)
Years ago, in the early days of the internet, I googled her and found nothing relevant. However, when I tried again in 2009 I found so much that I've been working on it ever since! Along the way, I've found so many other little stories and realised how many areas women have been involved in. I've come across news stories that have intrigued me, saddened me or surprised me. These are the stories that I'll be putting on this site.
I hope you enjoy the website and that you'll let me know about any stories that you have, or that you think should be included.
