Hanna Reitsch, 29 March 1912 – 24 August 1979
Hanna Reitsch was a German aviator and the only woman to be awarded the Iron Cross First Class and the Luftwaffe Combined Pilots-Observation Badge in Gold with Diamonds during World War II.
(I had to consider whether or not to include Hanna Reitsch as she was a Nazi, but decided to because she was certainly an example of a woman in a non-traditional role)

Agnes Weston, 28th March 1840 - 23 October 1918
Agnes Weston set up the "Sailor's Rest", providing accomodation with reading rooms, dining rooms and social space for sailors visiting port. These were temperance buildings giving the "bluejackets" somewhere to go other than pubs. Agnes Weston also wrote to sailors, produced newsletters, organised food parcels, set up boys brigades and provided financial and other help for Naval wives and families.
