Monday
10th Day – 22nd July 1957
We left the Hotel early this morning and started back over the Arleberg Pass.
It was raining again.
We stopped at St Anton again and I went into the house we stayed at to see if I had left my shoes there but no luck. We had coffee.
It was bitterly cold with new snow on all the mountains.
We pushed on into Switzerland where we had lunch. It was a big bowl of egg soup and a huge helping of pork and potatoes with salad as usual. We had a shock when we saw the bill, it worked out at about 15/- per head.
We carried on as fast as we could into Germany and decided to stay at Yiettisee for the night but when we got there every place was full (We had stopped at a place called WILL in Switzerland and bought chocolate & cigarettes). We went from place to place but as it was full of German holiday makers we just could not get in any place.
We stopped for a meal at 10 o’clock at night and had veal & mushroom pie & cold meat and they charged us about 15/- a head for it.
We just had a most unfortunate day.
At last about 11 o’clock after an awful drive through rain & mist we came to FRIEBURG but again we could not get in. At last a man in an Hotel phoned up a place 4 miles away and got us rooms there, where we had a drink and went to bed. It was still pouring of rain. (The place was called AU).
Alex got out of the car in Frieburg to ask a lady the way and she walked him about halfway talking away to him in Germany.
